Our Wedding Day: September 14, 1996 in Fulton

September 14th, 1996. Thirty years ago this year, we stood together in Christine’s hometown of Fulton and got married. It’s hard to believe how much time has passed, and yet looking back at these photos, so much of it feels like yesterday. This post is our way of pausing to mark the milestone — a little trip down memory lane for the family, with the photos to prove it all actually happened.

What a beautiful bride

The wedding was held in Fulton, which was Christine’s home turf, and it took not one, not two, but three pastors to pull the whole thing together. Our longtime pastor Mitman was there, as was Pastor Mark from Christine’s hometown. Rounding out the trio was a pastor from Buffalo, where we were both studying at the time — he had led our marriage counseling and preparation sessions. That Buffalo connection mattered, because Christine and Adam were both deep in our PhD programs in chemistry at SUNY@Buffalo, which would become one of the running themes of the day.

Everyone was excited for the day to begin as clearly shown below: Pre Wedding photos

That Buffalo pastor is responsible for one of the most memorable — and honestly hilarious — moments leading up to the wedding. During our preparation sessions, he had us take the Myers-Briggs personality assessment. When the results came back, he told us something he said he had never encountered before in all his time doing marriage counseling: we had absolutely no overlapping personality traits. Not one. He looked at us, looked at the results, and said it must be the chemistry. Romantic photo of Adam and Christine Given that we were both working toward PhDs in chemistry at the time, the line landed perfectly. We’ve been laughing about it ever since.

We rounded out with 8 on each side - what can we say - from childhood, to college and then grad school representation was needed. Adam's Groomsman

The ceremony itself brought together family from both sides, and it was wonderful to have so many people who loved us in the same room. There were parents, grandparents, cousins, and friends all gathered together to witness it.

The exchange of rings and the ceremony at the altar are the kinds of moments that are over before you fully absorb them, but the photos have a way of giving them back to you.

Then there was the limo situation. We were supposed to have a limo — and instead, we got a bus. To our credit, we made the most of it, and honestly it probably made for a better story than a limo ever would have.

The reception was everything a wedding reception should be. The dance floor was busy from the start, the families mixed and celebrated, and there were plenty of memorable moments caught on film.

Thirty years. Three pastors. Zero overlapping Myers-Briggs traits. One bus. And apparently, a whole lot of chemistry. Here’s to the day that started it all, and to every year that has followed.
